1. The Childwick Trust: International

What services do they offer:

  • The Jim Joel Fund, a funding scheme under the Childwick Trust, provides grants to South African NGOs supporting education and early childhood development.





Who Qualifies:

  • The Trust also operates in South Africa. This area of our Objects reflects the Joel family’s long involvement in the mining industry in South Africa. Predominantly funds are given to Early Childhood Development Projects and applications are administered on behalf of The Directors by Mrs. Giuliana Bland at The Childwick Trust’s Jim Joel Fund in South Africa.
  • Mrs. Bland can be contacted via email or by telephone on (0027) 011 704 6539. Office hours are Monday and Tuesday mornings between 8am-1pm.
  • The Trust also provides funding for South African residents to promote education through Charitable Institutions in South Africa or the U.K.

2. Allen Foundation: International

What services do they offer:

  • The Allen Foundation was established in 1975 by agricultural chemist William Webster in Michigan. The goal of the Foundation is to finance projects willing to improve human nutrition by means of conducting research, establishing education programmes or training on the subject of nutrition.

Who Qualifies:

  • Further nutritional research
  • Educate mothers, during and after pregnancy, so that good nutritional habits can be formed at an early age.
  • Disseminate good nutritional practices and habits
  • Train new nutritional educators who will work with segments of the population in the need of nutritional advice
  • Exceptionally, the Foundation also gives money to solve urgent problems of hunger derived from unexpected circumstances such as natural disasters or wars.

3. Department of Social Development: Funding for Early Childhood Development Centers (Government)

What services do they offer:

  • Early Childhood Development Centre (Crèches) is a facility that provides learning an support appropriate to the child’s developmental age and stage.
  • Funding and assistance with setting up ECD sites

Who Qualifies:

  • Organisations that are running ECD Centres (including crèches) in the community for children between the ages of 0 – 6 years

What services do they offer:

  • Assistance was given to a variety of school-based educational projects, early-childhood development, rural-school refurbishment, support for teacher training initiatives, support to tertiary institutions and any other priority areas in education in line with national priorities.

Who Qualifies:

  • The following process is applied when considering a project for funding:
  • A background check is done by requesting information on the organisation and individuals within that organisation.
  • A Nedbank Foundation official conducts a face-to-face interview with representatives of the organisation to understand the project needs.
  • The Nedbank Foundation official undertakes a visit of the project to confirm facts.
  • The Nedbank Foundation ensures that proper financial control measures and governance structures exist within projects.
  • Confirmation of cofunders’ names is done to eliminate the possibility of a conflict of interest, avoid reputational risk to the bank and duplicated funding for the same purpose.

6. Telkom (CSI)

What services do they offer:

  • The Telkom Foundation conducts all Telkom SA SOC Limited’s corporate social investment initiatives. The Telkom Foundation was established in 1998 and registered as a trust in 2002 for the purpose. Over the years, the Telkom Foundation has made meaningful contributions to disadvantaged communities by providing to the improvement of their livelihoods through a range of structured programmes. The Foundation is committed to making meaningful contributions to these communities through investment in education, community relief programmes and employee volunteerism.

Who Qualifies:

Education – to improve numeracy and literacy with emphasis on Maths, Science and Technology

  • Entrepreneurship – in support of the empowerment of small businesses as a vehicle for job creation
  • Blue Flag programmes – provision of assistance to communities who are victims of different forms of disasters

7. Hollard Investment ECD Project (CSI)

What services do they offer:

  • The Hollard Insurance Group established the Hollard Foundation Trust in 2006, from which time Hollard has been supporting the Foundation financially, through employee involvement and volunteering and participation on its Board.
  • We realise the importance for children and society of investing in children’s foundation years (0-9 years old) and so the Foundation’s and our focus is on the health, nutrition and education needs of children in this age group in the Midvaal, a large municipal area south of Johannesburg, providing them with the opportunity to achieve their full potential in life.  This is done via the Kago Ya Bana programme in Midvaal.

  • Homes for children infected with HIV/AIDS
  • Healing through the arts child and youth center
  • Streetwise Finance
