5. Babette Taute Scholarships in South Africa

The late Babette Taute left the major part of her estate to establish a bursary trust for stu- dents of English. Applicants must be South African citizens or have permanent resident status in South Africa.

Students of any branch of English language and literature study, including applied language studies, are eligible for the awards, but study directly related to English must constitute a major or at least 50% of the year’s work.

The undergraduate and post- graduate scholarships are awarded for full- time study only. The amounts awarded and the number of awards in each category may change from year to year. Awards are made on merit, broadly interpreted. A really good academic record is a requirement for an award.

However, the trustees are also interested in other forms of merit. These might include leadership in cultural or social areas, quality of public- ations, and excellence as a teacher of English or a translator. Scholars and bursars may hold other awards, provided that the total value of awards held may not exceed R25 000.

The trustees have decided to make awards in three categories: Book bursaries of R2 000 each for part-time final year under- graduates and part-time Honours students in their final year of study. Full-time applicants who do not receive scholarships will also be considered. Undergraduate scholarships of R11 500 each for full-time students entering the final year of study for their degrees. Honours scholarships of R15 000 each for full-time students in a one-year Honours programme or its equivalent.
